Ethereum's standard interface for fungible tokens.
A self-custody sender pays Ethereum execution costs in ETH.
It may not equal the current raw network gas estimate.

Reference figures
Verify on the platform before sending| Situation | ERC20 fit | Reason | Check before sending |
|---|---|---|---|
| Destination requires Ethereum USDT | Strong | Funds arrive on the needed chain | Token/network support and contract |
| Small exchange transfer | Conditional | Fixed withdrawal cost may dominate | Net amount in final preview |
| Receiver lists only TRON | None | Different blockchain route | Do not send ERC20 |
| Self-custody wallet onward use | Conditional | Future ERC20 transfer needs ETH | Hold enough ETH for gas |
What ERC20 means for USDT
ERC-20 defines common token functions and events for contracts on Ethereum. USDt's Ethereum representation follows this route, which is distinct from Tether tokens on TRON, Solana, or other supported protocols.
The ticker alone is therefore insufficient. The withdrawal and deposit screens must both identify Ethereum or ERC20 for USDT.
Run the compatibility check
Generate the address from the receiving platform's USDT–Ethereum deposit screen. Confirm the platform accepts token deposits to that address, note the minimum, and check for suspension.
In the sender, select USDT–Ethereum/ERC20 and compare the pasted address carefully. Do not send to an unsupported contract address or use a deposit route intended only for native ETH.
- Choose USDT before the network.
- Match Ethereum/ERC20 on both sides.
- Review the token contract only through official references when self-custody is involved.
- Retain the TxID.
Evaluate the economics
For exchange withdrawals, the fee shown in the authenticated confirmation flow is the relevant quote. It can be updated with network conditions and does not have to track a wallet gas estimate one-for-one.
Judge the fee relative to the amount and the cost of reaching the required destination. A more expensive direct Ethereum withdrawal can still be rational if an alternative would require another withdrawal, swap, or bridge.
When ERC20 is the network the receiver actually needs
ERC20 is appropriate when the recipient explicitly needs USDT on Ethereum—for example, an Ethereum application or custodian that does not support another network. It is also a reasonable backup when no other network is available on both sides.
Avoid it when the receiving screen does not list Ethereum, the quoted net received is unacceptable, or you will immediately need the asset on a different chain and have not evaluated the extra conversion risk.
Plan for self-custody gas
An exchange pays for broadcasting its withdrawal and presents its own fee. Once USDT reaches a self-custody Ethereum account, a later ERC20 transfer requires ETH for gas; the USDT balance itself cannot pay standard Ethereum gas.
Do not strand the token by sending the entire ETH balance away. Estimate the next transaction through the wallet immediately before using it.
Investigate missing deposits
Separate exchange processing from Ethereum confirmation. No TxID means the sender may still be processing; a TxID allows you to check the destination, token contract, status, and confirmations.
If the transaction is confirmed at the correct address but uncredited, provide the TxID and deposit details to the receiver. If the network was unsupported, recovery is not guaranteed.
Questions people ask
What should you know before transferring USDT?
Why can ERC20 withdrawals cost more?
Ethereum execution costs and the exchange's withdrawal-pricing policy can both affect the quote. Use the final authenticated preview, not a historical fee table.
Can I send ERC20 USDT to a TRC20 address?
No. They are different blockchain routes. Use the exact network and address generated by the receiving platform.
Do I need ETH for an exchange withdrawal?
The exchange handles broadcast and quotes its withdrawal fee. You need ETH for a later ERC20 transfer only when controlling the receiving wallet yourself.
Is an Ethereum address enough to confirm support?
No. Confirm that the receiving service explicitly supports USDT deposits on Ethereum at that address.
When is ERC20 worth using for a USDT transfer?
Use it when the recipient specifically needs USDT on Ethereum or when it is the only mutually supported route. For a small transfer, compare its final exchange fee with the amount that will actually arrive.
How long can an ERC20 USDT deposit take to appear?
It depends on sender processing, Ethereum confirmations, and the receiving platform's crediting policy. Once the TxID is confirmed, use the receiver's official support flow if the stated crediting window has passed.
